This season, MHA is adding something new to our Learn to Play program. We will begin with 3 sessions that focus on the fundamentals of skating, and these sessions will be held on Sundays (September 12, 19, and 26). This offers the opportunity to get onto the ice without hockey gear (either a hockey helmet or bicycle helmet is required). Skates will be provided by BoPARC. Our program is being ran/managed by members of the Center for Applied Coaching and Sport Sciences at WVU. Instructors will work with beginners as they become accustomed to standing and moving on the ice.
Our remaining 5 Learn to Play sessions will then continue on Sundays (October 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31). Full hockey gear will be included at no additional charge while participating in our Learn to Play program.
Our Learn to Play program offers a low cost opportunity to try hockey before our Skill Development program begins on November 1st. For a fee of $70, all rental equipment will be provided, and 8 hours of ice time will be allotted. (Note: USA Hockey Registration is required as well, with those fees paid separately directly to USA Hockey. There is no fee charged for USA Hockey Registration for birth years 2015 and later, but registration is still required.) If you decide to continue into our Skill Development program, you can register for that at a later date (anytime prior to November 1st).
We had quite a significant number of attendees in previous seasons, so to address this and prevent having 80+ skaters on the ice simultaneously we have decided to offer 2 groups per date. Group A will be from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM, and Group B will be from 12:15 PM - 1:15 PM. When you register for Learn to Play, you can choose which Group session you wish to attend.
To register, visit our Registration Page. You will first follow the link for the USA HOCKEY REGISTRATION. Once you have your USA Hockey Registration confirmation number, follow the link for the MHA ONLINE REGISTRATION. During the registration process, you will be able to select which group (11:00 AM or 12:15 PM) you wish to attend. Space is limited to 40 skaters per group. If you will need rental equipment for the Learn to Play sessions, please also choose the "Equipment Rental - No Charge" option, so that we know that you will need equipment. Dates for equipment distribution will be provided soon, and will happen prior to the October sessions. Once registered, you will receive an email from SportsEngine, asking you to join our Learn to Play group. (Be sure to download the SportsEngine app onto your smartphone.) It is through this group that you will receive any important information about the program.
